Glucophage XR is a prescription-only drug used to treat type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of drugs called biguanides, which work by reducing the amount of sugar (glucose) produced in your blood by your liver. It is important to note that this medication may not be appropriate for everyone. If you have diabetes, your doctor may adjust your diabetes treatment or prescribe another medication. Your doctor may also prescribe another medication.
This drug may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
This drug does not prevent or treats the type of diabetes that is often caused by obesity or type 2 diabetes. It does not prevent the development of heart disease or cancer.
This drug is not used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes because it can cause your blood sugar to rise, or the blood sugar to rise if you have high blood sugar. If you have diabetes, your doctor may prescribe a different drug or treatment.
Read the Patient Information Leaflet if available from your pharmacist before you start taking metformin and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. It may take several weeks before you get a full response from this medication. Take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day.
If you are using oral contraceptives, talk with your doctor before taking this medication. They may need to change the method of taking this medication to a pill.
If you are using a blood thinner, tell your doctor and pharmacist how much diabetes medication you are taking. Also, tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to any other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives of any kind. If you are taking a medicine for allergies, tell your doctor and pharmacist.
If you have diabetes and are not sure how to take metformin, ask your doctor or pharmacist. They may be able to give you additional instructions.
Tell your doctor if your blood sugar stays high for more than a few days after taking this medication.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. You should not breastfeed while you are taking this medication. Your baby may have birth defects if you breastfeed while taking this medication. Talk with your doctor about the best time to breastfeed while taking this medication.
Tell your doctor and pharmacist what other prescription and nonprescription drugs, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are using or have been taking.
